The highest echelon of Nigeria’s educational system may be in for a total shut down as lecturers of three major non-academic staff unions of the country’s universities have decided to meet on Wednesday to discuss whether to join the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Premium Times is reporting that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) will on Wednesday meet with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Non-Academic Technicians (NAT), in Abuja to decide on whether to join the ongoing industrial action by ASUU.

In an interview on Sunday, the National Public Relations Officer of SSANU, Abdulsubur Salaam said that the associations have been “pushed to the wall” by the Nigerian government.

“The federal government has been discussing with the academics but we have been reaching out to them since before now and they have refused to heed to us,” he said.

Salaam further listed some of the problems the unions had with the government.

“The issue of staff school that is being negotiated and we are not carried along was agreed on by the four unions in Nigerian varsities; our earned allowances have not been paid too and branches are really heaping pressure on us, especially on the staff school issue.

“So full blown strike may be inevitable as at now. However, we would take that meeting on Wednesday and make a decision on this there.”

ASUU, an umbrella body of all university lecturers in the country, is currently on strike over the federal government’s failure to fulfil its 2009/2013 agreement with the union.

There was panic in Eliozu axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday, when the body of an eight-year-old girl, Victory Chikamso, who was abducted, was recovered with her tongue, breasts, vagina and eyes removed.

The suspected ritualist, Ifeanyi Dike, was also arrested by the operatives of State Police Command attached to Okporo Police Station.

It was gathered that the victim, who was a resident of Messiah Street, Eliozu was abducted on Friday by Dike, who also lived on the same street.

SUNDAY PUNCH also learnt that the girl was defiled before she was killed, while her vital organs were removed and put in a polythene bag by the suspect.

The state police command said in a statement by its spokesperson, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, that the suspect was trying to dispose the mutilated body of the victim when he was apprehended by a local vigilante.

The statement read, “Today, at about 0130hrs, men of the Okporo Police Station arrested one Ifeanyi Chukwu Maxwell Dike (male, 23 years) of Messiah Street, Eliozu, Port Harcourt, who yesterday (Friday) abducted one Chikamso Victory (female, eight years) of the same address.

“The little girl was abducted, defiled and killed, while her vagina, eyes, tongue and breasts were removed and put in a polythene bag.

“The suspect was going to dispose of the body, when he was arrested by a local vigilante that suspected his movement.

“After he was questioned, the suspect dropped the bag and fled. Consequently, he was given chase and arrested. On further interrogation by the police, he confessed and took the police to where the vital organs were concealed.”

Omoni added that the body and organs of the victim had since been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary, while the suspect was being held by the police for further investigation.

The suspect, who described himself as a 200-level undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt, said he was lured into ritual killing by a man who promised to make him wealthy.

The father of the deceased, who identified himself as Ernest, expressed sadness over the murder of his child, as he thanked the police and the local vigilante for recovering his daughter’s body.

ASUU Embarks on Indefinite Strike.

The  academic staff union of universities has resolved to embark on an indefinite strike action.

This followed an extensive deliberation that lasted for three days.

All members of the union have been directed against going to teach or involving themselves in any academic activity.

A document titled “Strike Bulletin No.1”, which was signed and issued by Ogunyemi, ASUU said the strike action was to be a total, comprehensive and indefinite action whereby no form of academic activities including teaching, attendance of any meeting, conduct and supervision of any examination at any level, supervision of project or thesis at any level should take place at any of the nation’s universities.

According to the document, all means of negotiation had been exploited before the decision on an indefinite strike action was reached.

The lecturers have complained of poor funding of universities, part-payment of salaries of lecturers, non payment of earned allowances among others.
